About Mechanical Engineering
Trends in the scientific and technological world indicate rapid transformations in the scope of mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineers will continue to lead the world in providing significant contributions to the essential sectors including energy & environment, manufacturing, transportation, waste management and health & medical care. Mechanical engineers need to be trained not only in the traditional fundamental areas, but also in the emerging interdisciplinary areas. Nanotechnology and Mechatronics will have prominent places in the future.

Mechanical Engineering Department was established in 1990. The department runs UG programmes in shift I & II with intake is 240. The department has also introduced post graduate program in Mechanical Engineering Design approved by AICTE with effect from 2002-2003. The intake of PG program is 25. The department has highly qualified staff with research and industrial experience. Department undertakes R&D activities and consultancy assignments extensively. The students of the department also excel in the University and secure merit ranks every year. The head of the department is Dr. K.S. Zakiuddin.

The Central workshop with an area of 40,000 sqft. has a separate building. The workshop has six major sections namely, fitting, carpentry, welding, smithy, foundry and machine shop. It is fully equipped with machines which range from conventional engine lathe to contemporary CNC machine. The department has modern FMS and CAD laboratories for UG and PG programs. The Department has excelled in all the fields and gained the reputation in short span of time. The Department is also recognized as an approved Research Center of R.T.M. Nagpur University. At present 40 candidates are pursuing Ph.D. and 10 candidates M.E. by research in Mechanical Engineering from various regions of the state. Two staff members of the Department are recognized as a Research Supervisor for guiding the Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering under the faculty of Engineering and Technology.

The Department is accredited by NBA, AICTE, New Delhi. The department has received Research Promotion Grand of Rs. 5.00 lakhs from AICTE, New Delhi for Design and development of bamboo processing machine. The project is successfully completed. Department has also received a funding from the MODROB scheme of AICTE New Delhi for the up gradation of the laboratories entitled as Stress Analysis of Rs.3.55 lakhs. Faculties of department have given number of expert lectures on Research Methodology to various colleges of Maharashtra, Madhyapradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The department has established collaborations with 45 leading organizations grouped under four categories.

  • Private Organization
  • Public sector undertaking
  • CSIR Institutes and
  • Academia

Under these prominent organizations are Indorama Synthetics (India) Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., ACC Machinery, ACC Refractories, KEC International, Hindustan Levers, ISPAT Industries Ltd., DCL Polyesters Ltd., Lloyds Steels Ltd., Electrolux, MSEB, WCL, Ashok Layland, BHEL, CAT Indore (a Unit of BARC Bombay), CICR, CMRI, AMM (IIT Chennai), International Federation of Theory of Machines & Mechanisms and others. These collaborations are useful for getting assignments for industry oriented dissertations for the post-graduate course in Mechanical Engineering Design.

Dr. Zakkiruddin is the Head of the Department.
